Merry Christmas!

It's hard to believe that Christmas is here. I hope you are able to enjoy the holiday season with those you hold dear. Thank you for sharing your sweet child with me each day. They are counted among my many blessings.

Please encourage your child to take part in our winter reading challenge. Packets were sent home last week. Mrs. Linkous has planned a really fun celebration!

Saying Good-Bye Is Never Easy

We chose not to say "good-bye" to Ms. Wells on Friday, but rather "see you later". A very special thank you to everyone who donated things for her. We were able to surprise her with an iMovie that will allow her to always have a piece of us with her.  Thanks again for all that you did to help us let Ms. Wells know how much we love and appreciate her.

Voting...

This week students have learned all about the candidates running for governor (Nikki Haley and Vincent Sheheen).  Students took notes to learn about how each candidate said they could improve our state, their education, job experiences, family, and their thoughts on education.  Students took their voting very seriously and were able to formulate their opinion about each candidate.

Beans, Beans, Beans...

Students had a chance to investigate the parts of a seed this week in science class. They were able to see how germination takes place. We are currently investigating which grows faster- green beans or peas.  Stay tuned for the results.

This Just In...

CFG will be taking part in a global read aloud beginning next week. Mrs. Linkous has arranged for our class to connect with another third grade in Chicago! I can't wait to begin our read aloud and share this experience with another group of third graders. I'm sure we will learn a lot from our new friends in Chicago and that they will learn a lot from us too. Let the journey begin!!

Our Class is Full of Talent

Check out the video that Mrs. Hill our music teacher shared with us today.

We Are Scientists

We have been learning about the functions of parts of a plant this week in science.  Students started out the week forming a hypothesis about what they thought would happen to the celery when it was placed in water that blue food coloring had been added to.  Each day they have recorded their observations in their science journals.

Human Number Lines and Rounding

Want a skill to "stick"? Get them up, get them moving, and let them be silly...we formed a human number line to show halfway points and help us understand rounding to the nearest 10 and 100.

Pictures, Goodies for Grands, Fundraiser Kickoff, and Loads of Learning- Oh My!

I hope everyone has had a fabulous week! We have been very busy in Room 208!  We have learned more about South Carolina's six regions, compared numbers in math, and much more! Did you know that your child is already learning how culture and characters can impact a text? Pretty impressive, huh? :) They have also learned how to uncover the lesson learned in a folktale and how they can provide evidence from the text to support their answers. We are continuing to learn from Patricia Polacco in Writer's Workshop and have gained a wealth of knowledge and ideas for our own writing through her stories. We are going nonstop all day filling our brins with wonderful information...we keep up a steady pace of learning!

Ms. Wells and I look forward to seeing you at Open House on Monday, September 8th from5:30-6:30.  You will also have an opportunity to shop in our bookfair from 5:15-6:45. Be sure to check out our wall of fame with our very own "newspaper" stories about some pretty amazing kids- your children! :)

I appreciate the support that you have shown already this year. We are blessed with a great group of kids! They are working so hard and I couldn't be prouder of them.  Their success begins at home and carries over into the classroom. Thank you for going the extra mile by taking time to invest in your child's education. The payoff is priceless. :)

See you soon,
Mrs. Winebrenner

"Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner"

Thank you so much for supporting our Chick-fil-A Spirit Night on Tuesday. Our class had the highest percentage for participation! :) Today PTA surprised us by decorating our door. Three of our kiddos won Chick-fil-A gift cards when their names were drawn out of all of the slips of those who attended. Thank you so much for supporting CFG! I hope to continue our winning streak next month! I've heard that Ms.Plumley's class was close on our heels...so try to come on September 23rd. Thanks for all you do!

The World in Our Hands

We have finished globes! The kids really enjoyed this activity! It was a great way to introduce our map study. They took pride in their project, worked as a team, and learned where the continents and oceans belong in the process. I hope they will never forget their first week of third grade at CFG! Check out the pictures below- you can see how proud they are of the finished project. We are well on our way to a great year in room 208.

And We Have Water...

Today we were able to paint our globes and learned a song about the continents.  Students also learned that their teacher can't sing-but that she is willing to try!  Tomorrow we will add continents to our globes.  I am so proud of how well everyone is working as a team to finish this group project.  I can't wait to see the final product!

Our Journey Has Begun...

We have had a great start to our school year! Today we were finding "me on the map" by locating where we live in relationship to our city, state, country, and continent. We used Google Earth to check out North America, the United States, South Carolina, Chesnee, CFG, and even took a look at my house.  Then we made paper mâché globes. If your child came home with some white spots on their shirts, I'm so sorry- but good news, it's just flour and water.  :)

Students will have a chance to find their house on Google Earth later in the week. If you haven't checked out Google Earth, it's very cool! Take a look at the sweet faces in the pictures- it sure looks like they were having fun! :) I will take picture of the finished projects later in the week.

Stay tuned- there's loads of learning going on in room 208!
